Nacre Pietra Dura

(Mother of Pearl Inlay)

Old World Reinvented

Elissar Jewels' distinct signature style revolves around the reinvented stone pietra dura (Inlay) Technique. By merging ancient techniques with a modern wearable approach, Elissar Jewels creates unique pieces. The hallmark design incorporates Mother of Pearl or other stones inlaid in 18k Gold Jewellery.

Among the Persian techniques introduced by the Mughals to various countries, including India, the art of pietra dura holds a special place in my heart. This technique uses Nacre (mother of pearl) shells to intricately inlay patterns and designs, traditionally applied to marble or wood. The craft's origins in Egypt trace a path through time, finding its way to the Middle East and Asia. It signifies a unified appreciation for the beauty found in nature, the most captivating aspect of life.

pietra dura gained prominence at the Taj Mahal in Agra, where it was employed extensively throughout the monument. This architectural masterpiece, built by a king to commemorate his love, showcases the art's exquisite craftsmanship. To me, pietra dura evokes memories of my Lebanese upbringing, where exquisite inlay wooden trays were used to serve dates and coffee, embodying a heritage of elegance and tradition.
